Rugged Air RA200 General Aviation Student Pilot Headset

Does it have all the bells and whistles? Nope! But that's just fine at this price point. They work great. The sound is clear, the microphone works just fine, and I've had no problem wearing them for 2+ hours at a time. They're rugged and easily adjustable. A drop of thread lock on the adjustment screws might be a good idea--i nearly lost one of them when it jostled loose inside the carrying case. I also recommend the cloth ear cup covers--they increase the comfort level significantly, especially on hot or cold days

Very good value. I use it for comms while flying a FLPHG (foot launched powered hang glider) and connect it to an ICOM A16B airband transceiver with a PTT strapped to a finger. The sound is very good, and the microphone (M65HP) is an amplified electret mic. Only 'amplified mics' are required in all plugged-in (non-BT) aviation headsets due to the requirements of most airband radio circuitry. NO-- it does NOT have the M56 non-amplified mic that the published product description indicate, which would be wrong for any aviation headset. The wires are merely PVC-insulated rather than the higher cost silicone insulation, so you don't get what you're not paying for here. However, all the wires do have ground-shielding so even the 2-stroke engine ignition does not interfere with the mic or speakers. The plugs appear to be gold-plated and are very good quality. Speakers are 280 ohms appeace, so about 140 ohms impedence total. Volume control pot is 0 - 2k ohms. The cell-phone/music/recorder 1/8" jack is in series with a 10-ohm resistor. I actually gutted the headset so that I could insert the speakers, volume control, and mic boom into my full-face flying helmet. All the components are soldered to two small PCB boards (one in each ear-cup) that facilitate the dissassembly and then the final fitment into the full face helmet (Charly No-Limits - large size). All that is required to do is de-solder the connections, then re-solder them into your helmet -- easy peasy, perhaps with a little modification of the mic boom and the helmet padding. Flying in a prone position without wind protection at 50 mph except for some protection from the helmet chin-guard, the microphone works very well with the ICOM A16B. I am probably going to purchase another RA200 headset for my other open-face helmet and incorporate the full headset, sans head-pad, afixed onto the helmet shell. I believe this headset is a great value.

This is such a great headset that I purchased 3. They are afforadable, reliable, and have very good sound. Fully adjustable, and can have an external devices, such as a cell phone, attached. They also make a perfect gift; which is why I purchased them for my son (a new pilot). And you can't go wrong with a 7-year warranty that is easy to register on the Rugged web site.
